Maud Newton

I'm a writer and critic whose work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Bookforum, the Awl, Tin House, Narrative, the Los Angeles Times, NPR, Granta, the Paris Review Daily, Swink, the New York Times Book Review, B&N Review, and many other publications. I received the 2009 Narrative Prize for an excerpt from the novel I'm still writing. Though best known as a book blogger, I post only sporadically these days, and the scope of things I've written about on the site I started in 2002, maudnewton.com, is and always has been pretty broad. Writing while standing on the subway

I used to wonder how Maud Newton had managed to write so much great book journalism while also holding down what one of her bios calls “an incredibly unsexy day job in legal publishing.”

Then, recently, I came across a culture diary she kept for the Paris Review in 2010…

If I’m using a pen (as I often am, though I have been known to edit my drafts with eyeliner) I’m usually tinkering with things I’ve already written.

Sometimes I write little sections on my phone. I can do it with one hand if necessary! I know a lot of people resort to this nowadays, but I’d love to know exactly how many.
