Obit of the Day (Historical): M.C. Escher (1972)

Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher, known for his works of “impossible reality” died on March 27, 1972. He was 73 years old. Escher used perspective, interlocking figures, and, later on, mathematical symmetry to create mesmerizing works that show scenes that cannot exist, transformations of creatures from one to another, and patterned tilings that go on infinitely.

RIP, MC.  I can only imagine what your version of heaven (or hell) must look like.

I imagine his heaven and hell as black and white and interlocking, like his angels and devils, but with the lush, fanciful detail of his nature drawings. (Those snakes are great — so creepily organic. The tempting serpent in lacy woven wicker.)

I love your work, and the way it turned my point of view all topsy-turvy. Thank-you MC Escher
